The money spent on buying cars for President Jacob Zuma’s wives could have funded 116 university students for a year‚ or to hire an additional 61 police officers for a year.

This is according to Democratic Alliance MP Zakhele Mbhele‚ who noted the amount also equates to the funds needed to provide jobs to 1‚315 workers under the Expanded Public Works Programme.

Mbhele ascertained from Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko in a parliamentary question on Tuesday that 10 vehicles worth a total of about R9 million were bought for Zuma's wives between 2013 and 2016 using the budget of the police department.

He was outraged that instead of creating police posts‚ public jobs or funding education‚ "the President decided to rather spend this gigantic amount on lavish VIP vehicles for his wives".

Mbhele said: "South Africa’s economy is in a dire state. The economy is bleeding jobs‚ while President Zuma continues to bleed South Africans dry."
