Sibanye mine strike is called off

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) said on Monday its members at Sibanye’s Kroondal mine had resolved to return to work. Amcu members held a mass meeting on Monday‚ with further meetings planned with management to discuss a litany of issues‚ including transport‚ Amcu general secretary Jeff Mphahlele said.“This is quite a complex situation‚ that has many other issues involved‚” Mphahlele said.The union expected to report back on Tuesday after meeting management on Monday.Sibanye had obtained a court interdict on Friday against the strike‚ with company spokesman James Wellsted saying on Monday morning that turnout out at the weekend had been low.Amcu’s grievances mainly centre on the provision of transport for employees‚ but also include travelling‚ safety bonuses‚ and drilling allowances.The mine‚ near Rustenburg‚ employs 10‚000 people and Amcu represents about 65% of the workforce.Kroondal is owned by Aquarius Platinum‚ a company Sibanye bought for $294m as part of its expansion into platinum. A three-year wage deal in the sector expires at the end of June‚ with Amcu still consolidating its demands...
