The Gauteng social development department has rallied to the aid of a young Malawian woman who gave birth to twins in a bus after it broke down on the East Rand.Mercy Ndlovu‚ 21‚ who was seven months pregnant‚ gave birth to the premature twins on Wednesday while travelling by bus to Mozambique.The bus experienced a mechanical breakdown on the Tom Jones off ramp in Benoni‚ Ekurhuleni. Paramedics were called to the scene and helped deliver the babies whom they nicknamed Tom and Jones.“The woman and the babies were rushed to Oliver Tambo Memorial Hospital where they are receiving medical attention. The twins are expected to be in hospital for a month‚” said the Gauteng Department of Social Development.Ndlovu has been placed in a shelter while waiting for the infants. The department has also brought together various government departments such as Home Affairs‚ International Relations and Co-operation and Health as well the Malawian Embassy to facilitate documentation for the babies.“I was touched by this matter‚ it happened at the time as we are commemorating Child Protection Week in our country. We could not let these infants continue with this bus as they were going to be exposed to health hazards‚” said Gauteng Social Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza.“Besides‚ as South Africa it is Ubuntu to show compassion to your neighbour‚ Malawi is our neighbour. The baby’s mother will remain in the care of the Department while awaiting her infants. The Department will also arrange travelling documents and a plane ticket for her and the babies‚” Mayathula-Khoza said...
