In three months the University of Johannesburg (UJ) has managed to raise R60-million for the “missing middle” students - those deemed too rich for student funding and too poor to afford to pay tuition. In February this year‚ the institution launched its ambitious bid to try and assist students who couldn’t afford to pay tuition fees on the heels of the #FeesMustFall movement that swept through the country.UJ called upon individuals and organisations in both government and the private sector to contribute.Speaking to Talk Radio 702 on Monday‚ Professor Tshilidzi Marwala‚ deputy vice-chancellor of research and innovation at UJ‚ said the issue of funding higher learning institutions was not specific to one establishment‚ but was an issue facing the whole of society.Marwala said that although the R60-million that had been raised seemed like a lot‚ it would only go towards funding about 3500 legible students.“Education is expensive. To put this into perspective‚ education costs R85000 at UJ‚ this includes tuition‚ accommodation‚ textbooks‚ food and living expenses‚” said Marwala.Marwala said those who had donated understood that the initiative was for the greater good.“An educated society is good for our economy. It's good for social infrastructure and political infrastructure. This isn't just an investment in the individual; it’s an investment in the country. The more we educate our people‚ the better off we are as a society‚” said Marwala.More donations were still welcome Marwala said. – TMG Digital..
