KZN MEC calls for probe into suspects’ daring escape from police van

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport‚ Community Safety and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda has called for a full-scale investigation into the escape of two suspects from a police van in Pinetown near Durban. Video footage showing the suspects’ daring escape from the back of the parked police van in a busy street in the town while watched by several people has gone viral on social media.According to Kaunda‚ the two suspects had been arrested for carrying dangerous weapons.“It is not clear whether the bakkie was locked or a member of the community assisted the suspects to open hence the call by MEC Kaunda for a thorough investigation‚” said the MEC’s spokesman‚ Sipho Khumalo.“We are calling for a full scale investigation into this matter. If police were negligence‚ action must be taken against them. If a member of the community assisted the suspects‚ law must also take it cause‚” Kaunda said on Saturday.“We are also disturbed at the behaviour of some members of the public who were watching as the incident happens and turning this into a mockery instead of assisting the police.“We urge the people of KwaZulu-Natal to work with the police because it is only through strong partnership between police and the community that we can fight and defeat crime‚” Kaunda added...
