Vlakfontein protesters block Joburg’s Golden Highway

Residents of Vlakfontein‚ south of Johannesburg‚ have barricaded the Golden Highway in a protest over power outages. Protesters braved the cold on Monday night and Tuesday morning‚ and went to the busy road to vent their frustrations.They complained about continuous electricity blackouts in the area.Tension at Vlakfontein has intensified. Protestors have now blocked off entrances to Zak Park at the traffic lights...Posted by Intelligence Bureau SA on Tuesday, June 14, 2016Residents claimed that they have been living in the dark since Sunday and have not received a response about why there was no electricity in their area.Trees‚ tyres and other objects were set alight across roads to prevent vehicles from passing.A police Nyala was pelted with stones when it passed near the crowd.Police kept an eye on the protesters while they directed motorists to use alternative routes.Resident Moeletsi Khomedi said they were tired of living in the dark‚ while neighbouring areas had electricity. Johannesburg metro police spokesman Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said one of their patrol vehicles was stoned and they have opened a case of malicious damage to property.“This is a service delivery-related protest over electricity. We are monitoring the area closely and our members are diverting motorists to use alternatives roads and the nearby N1 freeway.
