Nearly 100 feared injured after two trains collide head-on in Durban

As many as 100 people have been injured after two passenger trains collided in Durban on Thursday afternoon. Exact details of injuries are still to be confirmed‚ as paramedics and emergency services are still on the scene.The accident happened at about 3pm in Lamontville‚ south of Durban.80 ppl being transported to hospital from #Lamontville train accident. (@ER24EMS) June 23, 2016TweetThe trains‚ according to paramedics‚ collided head-on."Shortly after 3pm‚ paramedics were called to the scene where they found one of the trains partially derailed and the other with severe damage to one of its coaches. Various passengers from the train were found either sitting or lying next to the train near the railway tracks. It is believed that they got out of the train shortly after the collision‚" said ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak.He added that about 70 people were being treated for injuries ranging from "lacerations‚ to possible spinal injuries and soft tissue injuries".Netcare911's Athlenda Mathe said that "scores of people" were injured‚ and that paramedics were still assessing patients to establish the severity of their injuries.As many as 100 people could have been injured.
