State Security Minister clears rubble in Tshwane

State Security Minister David Mahlobo has arrived in Mabopane‚ Tshwane‚ as the capital city began to calm after a wave of election campaign protests.On his arrival‚ Mahlobo said that he was there to assess the situation.In Mabopane‚ police discovered two dead bodies on Thursday‚ which took the death toll for the protests to five. Since Monday‚ residents of major townships in Tshwane have been blockading roads and looting shops‚ in protests against the ANC’s decision to name former public works minister Thoko Didiza as the mayoral candidate for the city.Mahlobo was seen helping with the removal of the rubble on the streets and inspecting the damage at a looted shop.Mahlobo was part of the security cluster media briefing which was held in Pretoria on Tuesday. He told reporters that government knew that the violent protests had been planned and even knew the people orchestrating them.Other townships such as Mamelodi‚ Hammanskraal and Atteridgeville have been quiet on day four of the protests. Earlier‚ the ANC’s Gauteng provincial leadership held a media briefing where they presented all the party’s mayoral candidates.
