The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) on Sunday told of coming to the rescue of four people - among them a pregnant teen – who had become trapped in a cove by a high tide.

The Gordons Bay duty crew were told of the foursome’s plight at 8.20 on Saturday night and dispatched a rescue team‚ joined by Gordons Bay Security’s ambulance services and Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services.

“On arrival on the scene‚ the four were found safe but unable to get out of the cove due to high tide that had cut off the exit route‚” an NSRI statement said.

Three were 18 years old‚ a male and two females - one pregnant‚ and a 30-year-old man from Gordons Bay and Durbanville.

“They had been out fishing for the day but unable to return because the exit to the cove had been cut off by high tide and getting cold in the winter night they had raised the alarm.

“Fears were that they may suffer hypothermia waiting for the tide to drop enough to get them out.

“Once the tide had dropped. NSRI were able to walk them out from the cove safely and although they were not injured in the incident as a precautionary measure the pregnant female was transported to hospital by ambulance for a check-up.”
