Firefighters struggle to contain blaze in Jeffreys Bay

The Billabong warehouse in Jeffreys Bay was gutted by fire on Tuesday night. This comes just a week before the seaside town hosts the annual Jeffreys Bay Winterfest.Kouga Municipality spokesman Mfundo Sobele said the emergency room received a call about the fire just after 12am.“Our fire department reacted immediately and‚ on arrival‚ the whole warehouse building had already caught alight‚” Sobele said.According to the St Francis Chronicle‚ firemen from Jeffreys Bay Fire Department were unable to control the blaze and the entire building was destroyed.Sobele said all vehicles from Jeffreys Bay‚ St Francis Bay‚ Humansdorp and Hankey – where the municipality has fire stations – were called to the scene and they had two vehicles that they requested from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality on standby.The firemen managed to save surrounding buildings at the Billabong Village in Da Gama Road and the municipal sewer plant in the area.The fire was extinguished at 3.30am and firefighters remained on the scene conducting damping-down operations until 5amThe cause of the fire is still unknown and the extend of the damage is also not known at this stage.
