Number of people in informal settlements remains stubbornly high

The number of people living in informal settlements has remained stubbornly high despite government's various interventions to provide formal housing. Of the nation's 16.9 million households‚ the number of people living in informal settlements stood at 13% in 2016. This was marginally lower than the 13.6% recorded in the 2011 census.This information was revealed during the release of the Community Survey 2016 in Pretoria on Thursday.In 2001‚ 16.4% of households were in informal settlements. The survey further showed that 7% of households live in traditional dwellings (huts) while 79.2% live in formal dwellings. Households living in formal dwellings had picked up from the last census in 2011 when the figure stood at 77.6%...
