Lethathobe‚ 46 is part of a larger community that live in Umzimhlophe female hostels in Soweto.Lethathobe lives with her four grandchildren and son in a two bedroom unit that is plagued by flies due to the sewage dumped in front of her hostel. She and other hostel dwellers were invited by Minister of Human Settlements Lindiwe Sisulu to view progress the department has made with its Breaking New Ground housing projects in Soweto. Sisulu promised that the first 16 units will be completed in the next three months. The remaining 282 houses will be finished in 2018.Tuso Zibula‚ spokesperson for the Department of Human Settlements‚ said the new BNG houses will have two bedrooms‚ a lounge‚ kitchen and a bathroom.Sisulu apologised to the elderly women about the long delay it had taken her department to give them housing.“I beg you bomama (mothers) don't sell these houses. It's not nice to see people living in shacks because they have sold the government houses that were given to them. You no longer need omashonisa (loan sharks)‚ you can take your title deed to the bank and get a loan if you need one‚” said Sisulu.Lethathobe said she looked forward to the new houses but expressed disappointment with the City of Johannesburg.“Don't be fooled by what you see now. There was filth all over here‚ rubbish that keeps on getting dumped right in front of our units. They only cleaned up because the minister was coming. I go through six cans of Doom a week thanks to all the sewage that gets dumped in front of my place‚” said Lethathobe...
