Six people were arrested on Wednesday after they clashed with police during violent protests in Soweto. Roads - which are being revamped - were trashed with litter.Large and small shops surrounding the area were closed‚ while a large number of street vendors stood next to their wares fearing the rowdy youths who were threatening to rob them.The South African Police Service joined by Metro Police dispersed the crowd with teargas and rubber bullets. They were pelted with stones‚ followed by a barrage of insults.Community leader Robert Dlamini said they began protesting peacefully until police fired shots at them."People want to see change in our area. Only a few streets were blocked and police triggered the situation by opening fire at protesters‚" he charged."We are now patrolling outside these shops to prevent people from looting and stealing‚” he said.Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela that six people have been arrested for public violence.TMG Digital/SowetanLive..
