SANCO condemns torching of classrooms in North West

The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in the North West province on Sunday condemned the torching of six classrooms at Setilo Secondary School at Mareetsane village near Mahikeng which has been blamed on political violence.The classrooms were burnt down on Thursday‚ according to Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshega.She said in a statement that a mob had allegedly disrupted lessons at the school on Tuesday.“Learners and teachers were unable to continue with teaching and learning due to the disruptions and fears for the safety of learners and teachers‚” Motshega said.Three classrooms belonging to Grade 12 and three belonging to Grade 11 were burnt down.Condemning the incident on Sunday‚ SANCO provincial chairperson Paul Sebegoe said: "The misguided action will rob children of their education. Destruction of public infrastructure that was meant to uplift the community is a serious draw back.Sebegoe appealed for calm and urged the Mareetsane community to assist police to trace those responsible for the “dastardly act”."Efforts to bring the situation to normality must be intensified to frustrate plans to intimidate registered voters and disrupt local government elections‚" he said.He urged community to marginalise anarchists responsible for the arson and elements that had no regard for the future of learners...
