The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) is to take the City of Cape Town to court over its appointment of a mayoral committee it says is heavily weighted in favour of white men‚ the labour federation announced on Wednesday.

"The appointment of Mayco members… is disappointing and against the constitutional principles of employment equity and equality‚" Cosatu’s Western Cape secretary‚ Tony Ehrenreich‚ said in a statement issued on Wednesday afternoon.

"This Mayco has only three women and [comprises] 50% white members‚ most of whom have demonstrated their incompetence over the last two terms of 10 years.

  • Cosatu demands ‘dishonest and schizophrenic’ says City of Cape TownThe City of Cape Town has hit back at the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in the Western Cape following a protest by the federation against the state of public transport in the region on Tuesday.

"Cosatu will be taking this matter to the equality court to remove some of the DA verkrampte whites from leadership in the City."

Ehrenreich said the appointments showed how whites in the DA were favoured for senior positions.

"The people of the Cape Flats are only good enough to vote for the DA‚ but not good enough to lead the DA in Council. The high paying jobs all go to the white DA leadership‚ who are in the main are part of the old white political elite of DP and NP."
