A 34-year-old man has been arrested for the assault of an Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department station commander which went viral on social media this week.

EMPD spokesman Clifford Shongwe said the man appeared in court on Tuesday for the assault on chief superintendent Lucky Mbhele outside a school in Dunnottar‚ Nigel‚ on Monday and was remanded in custody until September 8.

In a video posted on Facebook‚ Mbhele is seen being thrown down the street and being dragged by the man in front of a crowd of people outside the school‚ including schoolchildren.

Shongwe said Mbhele was responding to a complaint lodged by the school to deal with a driver who was obstructing an entrance to the school.

Shongwe said there were no signs of physical injuries on the officer but he appeared traumatised.

“Officers on a daily basis face abuse from members of the public‚ but I am happy that most of them handle the situation professionally‚” Shongwe said.
