Suspect killed during heist was former cop dismissed after previous cash-in-transit robbery

A former police officer and four of his gang members were killed in a shootout with police in a foiled cash-in-transit robbery in Mpumalanga.Three policemen involved in the operation were injured late on Monday night‚ one of them fatally.Officers from the Special Task Force‚ Crime Intelligence Unit and the Hawks were tipped off about the planned heist in Secunda.Mpumalanga Hawks spokesman Captain Dineo Sekgotodi said four of the suspects were killed during the shooutout."Five were arrested at different scenes” following the heist‚ she said‚ adding that “two of these suspects were taken to hospital where one later died”.Sekgotodi said the other three were detained at nearby police stations.During the operation‚ three policemen were involved in a car crash and critically injured as a result. “Tragically one of the police died‚” said Sekgotodi. “The other two were airlifted to hospital.” She said that police seized three vehicles which were used by the suspects in the attempted heist‚ along with an AK-47‚ an R5 rifle and two pistols‚ one of which was stolen in Marble Hall in February.Sekgotodi said one of the dead suspects was a former policeman based in Secunda."He was dismissed from the service after he was arrested for an attempted cash-in-transit robbery in the same area where he was killed." TMG Digital/The Times..
