Online dating scammers nabbed after Hawks post dummy parcel

The Hawks on Wednesday announced the arrest of four suspected “online dating scammers” in Cape Town.The quartet - two Nigerian men and two local women – “were arrested…on Tuesday night for opening bank accounts with all the banks in South Africa and using those accounts to receive monies from online dating victims”‚ a statement said.“One suspect was arrested shortly after receiving a dummy parcel from the Hawks at Postnet Somerset West Mall.“The Hawks seized five laptops‚ two of them with profiles of people who have been fraudulently used to scam people online‚ as well as 12 cellphones.”The suspects - aged between 27 and 38 – are due in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.“The arrest of these four suspects takes the total number of suspects arrested for online dating scam to 11‚” the Hawks said...
