Learners descend on 'racist' Pretoria High School for Girls

A group of about 200 learners from various schools in Tshwane have camped outside Pretoria High School for Girls in Hatfield in solidarity with their fellow pupils at the school that has been rocked by allegations of racism. Earlier‚ the learners‚ led by the Congress of SA Students‚ rushed to the school’s shut gates and turned away motorists driving past the school and threw paving bricks on the road.Police moved in to block off the road to prevent motorists from using it.Inside the troubled school premises where black girls are allegedly not allowed to wear their hair naturally and called racist derogatory names‚ all seems to be running smoothly‚ with lessons under way amid a close watch by police.Following his interaction with parents‚ the school governing body and affected learners on Monday‚ Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said on Tuesday that a resolution has been reached and all hostilities at the Pretoria High School for Girls would cease. The section of the school's code of conduct that deals with hair has been suspended with immediate effect. Lesufi’s office has released a statement summarising the issues and the “way forward”.The learners staging the picket outside the school are waiting for a directive from the COSAS leadership as to their next move.TMG Digital/The Times..
