Msunduzi firefighters battled to contain a massive fire at a hall on the University of Kwazulu-Natal's (UKZN) Pietermaritzburg campus in the early hours of Wednesday. The cause of the fire - reported to be at the main exam hall - was unclear and there were no initial reports of injuries.University spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said the blaze started at the exam venue at about 4am. “The fire department was called in and managed to extinguish the flames by 7am. The cause has not yet been established. Security officials suspect arson. An investigation is currently underway.”He said that the university's risk management services and police were on high alert and were monitoring the campus. The incident comes on the heels of a fire on Monday that gutted a coffee shop on the Durban campus of the UKZN - as the institution faces ongoing protests by students.UKZN was closed last week following ongoing disruptions over a number of issues including tuition fees‚ complaints about accommodation and security as well as infighting amongst student bodies.UKZN vice-chancellor Albert van Jaarsveld issued a communiqué on Tuesday assuring students and staff that the academic programme would continue despite the protest action.“We urge students to cease and desist from engaging in illegal and destructive acts‚ and allow space for consultation to take place. Security has been beefed up on all campuses and every effort is being made in ensuring that the Academic Programme proceeds as scheduled with no interruptions‚" he said. The Witness reported the fire in Pietermaritzburg in a tweet on Wednesday that said‚ "#UKZN Pmb campus building razed in massive fire early this morning."#UKZN Pmb campus building razed in massive fire early this morning. pic.twitter.com/QjTUrGnM2c— The Witness (@WitnessKZN) August 31, 2016asyncThe building was extensively damaged‚ with part of the roof having caved in‚ as seen in a photograph published by the newspaper on Facebook on Wednesday. The remains of the building torched at UKZN this morning.
