Trial date for bribe case against former transport minister to be known in December

Former transport minister Sbu Ndebele and his five co-accused will have their trial date set when they return to court on December 1.

The six are facing 15 charges including bribery‚ money laundering‚ corruption and fraud.

All but Ndebele – who is the country's ambassador to Australia - appeared at the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday‚ where they had been expected to learn when their case will be heard at the Pretoria High Court.

But state prosecutor Peter Serunye told the court that he had yet to receive the date from the high court.

Serunye said the court roll manager indicated to him that a new roll would only be decided on in November.

This could see the matter being heard in 2017‚ more that a year after the accused were arrested and charged in December 2015.

Ndebele‚ accused number one in the matter‚ allegedly accepted a bribe of R10-million while still transport minister in 2010 from Tasima‚ a company managing the National Traffic Information System (eNaTIS)‚ for an illegal extension of its more than R2-billion contract.

Tebogo Mphuti and Justine Ncube are executives of companies accused of bribing Ndebele.

The companies‚ Tasima‚ Mandate Strategy Roadmap and Delivery‚ Brand Partners and Sinosa Construction‚ are also charged in their individual capacity.
