About 500 Western Cape emergency medical services staff marched through Philippi in Cape Town on Wednesday morning in protest at coming under attack by criminals‚ especially on the Cape Flats.

Employees pleaded with residents to help ensure their safety while they “serve communities”.

Some areas have been classified as “red zones” because it is so dangerous to work in them and ambulances need police escorts to enter.

Nyanga and Philippi SAPS cluster commander Brigadier Vuyisile Ncata pledged to help EMS staff in the red zones‚ even if it affects police response times.

Ncata appealed to members of the community to report criminal activity in their neighbourhoods.
