The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) vowed on Tuesday to bring Gauteng to a standstill when they march on International Decent Work Day on October 7.

"We... call upon all the members of the federation and all the workers in the province of Gauteng to shut down the province on 07 October 2016. We [also] call upon students to join in their numbers with their parents to shut down the province for these demands‚" said provincial secretary Dumisani Dakile.

He was briefing reporters at Cosatu House in Johannesburg. Dakile said the labour confederation viewed the march as the beginning of a campaign on behalf of workers‚ "to tilt the balance of forces in their favour against the ruling class and its allies which had benefitted over the past 22 years of the democratic rule".

Cosatu would be marching to the Department of Finance and the Chamber of Commerce where they will submit draft tax amendments to Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan.

Dakile‚ however‚ could not say how many of its members it was expecting during their mass action‚ stating that they were still finalising the operation plan and other logistics.

Cosatu's demands include a total ban on labour brokers‚ the scrapping of the e-tolling system‚ including the expensive toll gate‚s and free education.
