Unclear if students set UJ fire, could be electrical fault: university

The university of Johannesburg confirmed that an auditorium at its Bunting road campus caught fire on Thursday. University spokesperson Kaamini Reddy said it was unclear whether the fire was deliberate or had been caused by an electrical fault with a projector inside the auditorium. "We're not sure yet if it's an electrical fault‚ or an arson attack. The police are still investigating. We suspect it was a TV or projector in the auditorium that was set alight‚" she said.Reddy said it wasn't possible to estimate the cost of the damages yet.She said after intimidation and destruction on campus on Tuesday night‚ the university took a decision to increase the security presence on campus. This escalated to clashes between private security and students on Wednesday night‚ with some journalists injured too.Reddy said the security was required on campus as there were individuals set on violence‚ and the guards were supposed to break up any gatherings of students...
