At least 40 injured‚ one killed as bus overturns

At least 40 people were injured and one killed when a passenger bus overturned on the R56 approximately 15 kilometres outside of Ixopo near Pietermaritzburg in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands in the early hours of Saturday. Paramedics from ER24 and the KwaZulu-Natal emergency services arrived on the scene shortly after 4am on Saturday to find the bus lying on its side in the middle of the road. Several people were found trapped inside of the bus.“One person was found with fatal injuries and declared dead. At least three people sustained critical injuries with injuries ranging from fractures to amputations‚” said ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak.“Several people were removed prior to paramedics’ arrival to local clinics and Christ the King Hospital. ER24 dispatched additional resources to these clinics to assist with triage and transportation. 31 patients were treated at Christ the King Hospital and some were later rushed through to Edendale and Greys Hospital respectively‚” Vermaak said.He said the cause of the accident was not yet known...
