WATCH: UKZN suspends lectures at Westville campus after protests turn violent

Lectures were suspended on Monday at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Westville campus following clashes between students and security personnel. According to a communiqué to students‚ the university's executive director of corporate relations‚ Lesiba Seshoka‚ said groups of protesters had caused disruptions at some lecture venues.“The protesters also threw stones at security officials. University Risk Management‚ SAPS and Public Order Policing managed to disperse the protestors and are continuing to monitor the situation‚” Seshoka said.There was also “a small number of protesters were reportedly singing and chanting” near UKZN’s Pietermaritzburg campus.Seshoka urged students to desist from engaging in unlawful protest action‚ and warned that action will be taken against individuals found to be in contravention of a high court interdict.On Monday‚ toilets at the Westville campus were set alight and a security vehicle was overturned.eThekwini metro police spokesman Superintendent Sbonelo Mchunu said there had been a confrontation between some students‚ who threw stones‚ and police.“Police had been deployed on campus since early on Monday morning after receiving information that things were not going to be okay‚" said Mchunu.A UKZN student who asked not to be named said she had been in class when she heard that some students were protesting on the Westville campus.“Some of my classmates did not attend lectures because of the strike.
