MEC for Community Safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane has called for a harsh sentence to be imposed when alleged cop killer Joshua Bomba Shongwane is caught. "I appeal to the Criminal Justice system to apprehend a suspect and ensure that he receives the harshest sentence. "On behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government‚ I would like to send our heartfelt condolences to the captain’s family‚ friends and fellow SAPS members”‚ said Nkosi-Malobane. Shongwane who was about to appear at the Thembisa Magistrate's Court allegedly held three officers at gunpoint and locked them in a holding cell before shooting another officer as he fled. He was due to appear on numerous charges of hijacking. He had been implicated in nine hijackings committed in Thembisa‚ Rabie Ridge and Kagiso during 2012. According police spokesman Lungelo Dlamini‚ this isn't Shongwane's first bid for freedom. He escaped from the court cells in 2015 and was re-arrested. "He is considered to be highly dangerous‚" said Dlamini. He said the officer was shot in the lower body and died at the scene. "An investigation is in progress to determine how the awaiting trial prisoner got hold of a firearm whilst he was in the court cells." He appealed to anyone who may see the fugitive to contact Crime Stop at 0860010111 or to contact their nearest police station. A reward for information will be issued...
