Man accused of rigging security contracts with WC government misses court date

A former senior government official who was instrumental in allegedly rigging security contracts worth R35-million in the Western Cape will appear in court for corruption‚ fraud and money-laundering in November. The 52-year-old is a former deputy director in the Department of Community Safety in the Western Cape. He was arrested on Friday by the Hawks’ Commercial Unit.Hawks spokesman Captain Lloyd Ramovha said that during 2009 and 2010‚ the man was “instrumental in manipulating the tender processes at the Department of Health in the Western Cape”.“The said tenders‚ worth approximately-R35 million‚ were in respect of provision of security services to local clinics in the province.“As a result of the accused’s unscrupulous actions‚ tenders were allegedly awarded to undeserving companies‚ which had ties to the suspect.”The former official‚ who is yet to be named‚ was scheduled to appear in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Thursday but was absent due to an undisclosed illness.His legal representatives were in attendance‚ a warrant of arrest issued but held over pending his next appearance on November 29. – TMG Digital..
