Chaos erupts at UCT
Violence broke out at the University of Cape Town on Tuesday as protesters clashed with security‚ used trolleys as battering rams and pelted security guards in riot gear with rubbish bins.
Reports are coming in on social media of students being arrested and a heavy police presence on campus.
Journalist Ashleigh Furlong tweeted video of some of the clashes‚ “Chaos breaking out at UCT @GroundUp_News #UCT #Fees2017”.
In another post‚ she said: “Student taken inside building by private security. Some of her braids were ripped out @GroundUp_News #Fees2017 #UCT”.
“Chaos as UCT protesters clash with campus security‚” tweeted Sunday Times photographer Esa Alexander.
Protesters clashed with security guards as they tried to batter their way into a library.
UCT Law Student (s) tweeted that protesters were angry that four bags of faeces delivered to UCT by taxi had been intercepted by police earlier in the day.
The twitter account of the Muslim Students' Association of the University of Cape Town urged students to evacuate the campus for their own safety.
