Struggle stalwart Mewa Ramgobin dies

Former African National Congress (ANC) member of Parliament and struggle icon Mewa Ramgobin died on Monday night after a prolonged illness. The former Natal Indian Congress president and author of ''Waiting To Live'' and ''Prisms Of Light'' would have turned 84 on November 10.A family member said he was admitted to hospital on October 8 and was doing well until two days ago.Ramgobin‚ who married human rights activist Ela Gandhi‚ was amongst the first supporters of the Release Mandela campaign.He was banned for 17 years‚ placed under house arrest for 12 years and charged for treason in 1985 whilst he was a member of the United Democratic Front.He was an ANC MP until 2009.He was the founder of Centre for Learning of Ubuntu and Chairperson of Phoenix Settlement Trust‚ founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1904.Funeral details are not yet known. - TMG Digital/Sunday Times..
