Three arrested after shootout in Sandton

Gunshots rang out in Sandton just before midday on Wednesday as police pursued armed suspects.

Police had chased the group of armed suspects after a robbery in Rivonia.

"Armed suspects were spotted by police‚ after a getaway vehicle from a Rivonia robbery was spotted on the highway. The suspects opened fire on the police and a shootout ensued‚" paramedics from Emer-G-Med said.

Three suspects were arrested on the scene. Two are still at large.

A security officer sustained minor injuries to one of his hands. He was treated on the scene.

No other injuries were reported.

The shooting took place on the M1 North after the Grayston Drive offramp‚ north of Johannesburg.

Emergency services issued warnings to motorists to avoid the area‚ and if they could not‚ to expect heavy delays in both directions approaching the scene due to ongoing crime scene investigation.
