Tensions were high outside the Johannesburg Magistrates Court after former Wits student representative council president Mcebo Dlamini was denied bail on Wednesday morning.

Some of the supporters of the Fees Must Fall movement and workers from the University of the Witwatersrand‚ who had come in numbers to be present at Dlamimi’s bail application‚ broke down into tears when they heard it was unsuccessful.

Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command former leader Vuyani Pambo said they were not surprised by the outcome.

“I am not shocked. It was expected as you saw the attitude of the judge and the prosecutor. There's absolutely no reason why Mcebo Dlamini was denied bail today. Let us not behave like we'd didn't know that this would be outcome of the trial‚” said Pambo.

Dlamini was arrested over the weekend at his residence and is facing a number of charges‚ including assault‚ theft‚ possession of dangerous weapons‚ public violence and damage to property.

“We must not retreat and we must not surrender. The best thing we can do for those that are arrested is make sure that Wits University feels our wrath‚” Pambo said.

“We must not continue as usual. Adam Habib must know that they have committed a crime against us. It is time to show our true colours.”

Students and workers are planning to gather at the Holy Trinity Church where they will a way forward.

Amongst their plans of action will be to intensity their protest action and also make Johannesburg‚ in particular Braamfontein which borders Wits‚ dysfunctional.

Dlamini's next court appearance is November 15.
