An online petition calling for the release of arrested Fees Must Fall leader and former University of the Witwatersrand SRC president Mcebo Dlamini is gaining some support. The petition was created by a Cynthia Marebane‚ who describes herself as a legal and aviation compliance officer‚ and a political science graduate from the North West University on Wednesday. It comes shortly after Dlamini was denied bail in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Wednesday following his arrest on charges including public violence‚ assaulting a police officer‚ theft and being in possession of dangerous weapons. The petition‚ which is directed to the court and Wits vice-chancellor Prof Adam Habib‚ had garnered more than 300 signatures by Thursday morning. The online petition‚ which was posted on the Awethu Amandla website‚ states that Dlamini should be released “because he was arrested for something that affects all the students in South Africa”.Magistrate Albertus Roux denied Dlamini bail citing that it is not in the interest of justice to grant it. Dlamini has been instrumental in mobilising students in the often violent Fees Must Fall protests at Wits‚ which have seen the disruptions of classes in the past months.Dlamini is currently being held in police custody pending his next court appearance in court for trial.- TMG Digtial..
