A female traveller has been arrested after being caught with cocaine hidden in handbags lined with secret compartments‚ inside a larger suitcase. She was en route from Brazil to Johannesburg's OR Tambo Airport.

The SA Revenue Service said on Monday the female passenger was intercepted on Sunday by SARS Customs inspectors in the detector dog unit.

She had 8kg of cocaine valued at R2.3-million.

"The traveller’s luggage was scanned and five handbags lined with secret compartments were found inside one of the two suitcases after the dog reacted positively to the bag."

This is the second big bust in as many days - SARS Customs officials intercepted 7.5kg of liquid cocaine valued at R2.1 million hidden in hair treatment bottles at a courier company outlet at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday.

The consignment also came from Sao Paolo and was in transit via Johannesburg‚ destined for delivery in Cape Town.
