A knife-wielding house robber who attacked a family was shot in the stomach and killed by one of his victims – a policeman.

The 25-year-old broke into a home at Chippendale in Newlands West‚ near Durban‚ in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

He attacked the couple’s 22-year-old son whose father‚ a policeman‚ heard screams for help.

The policeman and his bleeding son wrestled with the robber while his wife went to fetch his firearm.

“At that time‚ the complainant and his son wrestled with the unknown suspect who was armed with a knife and the suspect then also pointed at them with a firearm (which was later discovered to be a toy gun)‚” said police spokesman Colonel Thembeka Mbhele.

“The complainant held the suspect down until his wife gave him his service firearm and the suspect was shot in the stomach. The suspect died on the scene.”

Tragically‚ the policeman’s son who was rushed to hospital after being stabbed‚ succumbed to his injuries.
