The man handed himself over to police on Thursday evening and will appear in court soon.

“This arrest sends a strong message that we will not tolerate attacks on our staff and that we will hunt you down‚” said City of Cape Town mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith.

“I commend everyone involved in the search for this suspect who was effectively forced to come forward as a result of sustained pressure.”

The perpetrator “emptied his clip” on the officer‚ a Constable Zegers‚ 40‚ just after 9am on Thursday after he responded to a shooting incident in Hanover Park.

The officer was struck in the stomach and in the hand but he still returned fire and even filled out paperwork‚ said Smith.
