At least 16 people have been injured in a collision between a bus and a taxi about 20 kilometres outside Tzaneen in Limpopo‚ paramedics said.

The accident occurred this afternoon on the R36. ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said it was understood that the driver of the taxi had lost control‚ causing his vehicle to swerve into oncoming traffic and collide head-on with the bus.

ER24 paramedics‚ along with various other services‚ had arrived on the scene to find the bus in the left lane of the road and the taxi lying on its side at the bottom of an embankment‚ he said.

“Paramedics immediately began triaging the patients found on the scene.

“16 passengers from the taxi were assessed and found to have sustained minor to moderate injuries.

“The patients were treated for their injuries and thereafter transported to various hospitals in the area for further treatment‚” Meiring said. He said it was believed that a number of the passengers from the bus had been transported privately‚ prior to the arrival of emergency services.
