The Tshwane municipal court on Visagie street in Pretoria has been closed for the day after a 76-year-old man killed himself with fireworks on Monday morning.

According to Tshwane metro police spokesperson Superintendent Isaac Mahamba the man had been summoned to the court for a protection order case.

“At around 08:00‚ witnesses saw him standing in the passage and taking out something that they thought was a cigarette. He put it in his mouth and when he tried to light it, it blew up in his face‚” Mahamba said.

He said the man was declared dead on the scene.

“It was later found that he had blown himself up with fireworks‚ but no one else was injured‚” Mahamba said.

He added that police investigators were investigating whether the fireworks had been tampered with.
