Police still hunting for suspects in Hammarsdale massacre

Police are still searching for the suspects who shot dead six people and wounded another in an attack on in the Georgedale area in Hammarsdale in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday night.

The victims were at a house in the area at about 9.30pm on Friday when they were gunned down by at least five assailants armed with handguns.

“It is alleged that they came to the homestead looking for one of the family members. When the door were opened the suspects allegedly opened fire killing six people and injuring one who was taken to hospital.

The deceased were identified as Hlengiwe Kubheka (20,), Siyanda Kubheka (26), Nonhlanhla Mbhele (22), Sphamandla Mavundla (27), Mcebisi Gondwe (29) and Sphelele Kubheka (37). The motive for the attack is unknown at this stage and six counts of murder and attempted murder were opened at Hammersdale police station,” police said.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major-General Bheki Langa, has condemned the slayings.

"It is totally unacceptable in our society to find people being killed in such a manner. I have instructed the Provincial Task Team to thoroughly investigate this case to the fullest.

 I also appeal to the community to remain calm and allow the police to get into the bottom of this massacre. Anyone with any information regarding the identity of the suspects is urged to come forward and contact their nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Police will continue to monitor the situation in the area,” he said.
