Suspected robber shot dead in botched Embalenhle ATM bombing

A man believed to have been part of a gang plotting to bomb an ATM at a social grant pay point was shot dead in Embalenhle on Wednesday morning‚ said Mpumalanga police.

The heavily armed group had stormed into an area where around 100 senior citizens had gathered to receive their grants‚ said Brigadier Leonard Hlathi.

“One security guard and a robber got involved in a struggle. During the process‚ the [security guards] and the robbers exchanged gunfire during which one robber was shot dead‚” Hlathi said.

The rest of the armed gang fled in three vehicles.

No other injuries or fatalities were reported.

Hlathi said a detonator was found fitted in one of the teller machines.

It was safely removed.

No arrests have been made as yet.
