Teens drown in Tonga dam‚ young lives gone 'in the blink of an eye'

An afternoon swim for three teenage girls has ended in tragedy in Tonga‚ Mpumalanga.

The friends‚ aged 13‚ 14 and 15‚ drowned in Dludluma‚ Tonga‚ on Tuesday afternoon‚ said police.

“According to an eyewitness who was with them‚ she said the girls were swimming with other two boys of the same age group‚ who managed to rescue themselves‚” said Brigadier Leonard Hlathi.

“However the girls are alleged to have gone yonder in the dam and went missing inside the water.”

Community members were alerted‚ and rushed to the scene where they managed to recover two of the bodies. The third was later retrieved by police divers.

Hlathi described the incident as "unfortunate".

"This is an unfortunate situation in which three young lives have been quashed in a blink of an eye‚ which could have been avoided‚" he said.
