A Western Cape man whose story about being robbed didn't only not check out‚ but landed up with him being arrested and charged with perjury and defeating the ends of justice.

The 42-year-old man from Worcester went to the police and reported that he had been robbed of R17 000‚ said Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk.

"During the interview the man gave confusing stories‚ which raised the suspicion of the police officers. They then went to conduct an investigation on the truck he was driving."

In the truck was R17 000.

"He lied to us [when] said he was robbed by armed robbers‚" Van Wyk said.

The complainant was arrested immediately and the money was confiscated by the police.

"Part of the investigation would attempt to determine whether the money was his or his employer's‚" Van Wyk said.

The suspect appeared in the Worcester Magistrate's Court on Friday. The case was postponed to March 23 for further investigation.
