Five people have died in a taxi crash on the N3 near the Pavilion shopping centre‚ Durban‚ on Friday.

The minibus‚ which had been travelling toward the city‚ was crushed between two trucks.

RescueCare spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the injured and the dead were trapped in the twisted metal of the minibus.

"At this stage three woman and two men have died‚" he said.

"Several others have been rescued from the taxi by paramedics and technicians using hydraulic rescue tools‚" Jamieson added.

They were treated and stabilised at the scene of the accident before being transported by ambulance to hospitals in the city.

Traffic built up back to Pinetown when three of the four lanes of the freeway were closed by rescue personnel.
