Employees at the Public Works department in Pietermaritzburg are receiving trauma counselling after a gunman shot an employee and her relative before turning the gun on himself on Friday morning.

Spokesman Kiru Naidoo said the shooting‚ which took place at about 8am‚ appeared to be related to a "personal" issue.

"The incident is unconnected with any official Public Works matter‚" said Naidoo.

“A female staff member and a male relative driving her to work suffered serious gunshot wounds. They are currently in a critical condition in a Pietermaritzburg hospital. The respective families have been informed.

“Staff members traumatised by the incident have been offered professional counselling services."

A 9mm pistol was found next to the gunman's body.

Police spokesman Captain Nqobile Gwala said two counts of attempted murder are being investigated and an inquest is underway. Police have not yet established the motive for the shooting.
