Tshwane protesters heckle police in standoff

As a group of protesters marched to Sunnyside‚ Pretoria‚ they were escorted by the police until they got to the corners of Nelson Mandela and Robert Subukwe streets.

A standoff ensued between the police and protesters with protesters shouting insults at the police for refusing to let them go to Sunnyside.

  • Over 100 people arrested in Tshwane protestsActing Police Commissioner Lt Gen Khomotso Phahlane said Friday's march by the Mamelodi Concerned Residents grouping had led to over 100 arrests. 

"You are protecting drugs. You are protecting corruption. Why are you doing this?" shouted one protester.

"You are all taking bribes. That's why you're stopping us‚" shouted another.

One man who only identified himself as Chris‚ said he came here today to fight against drugs and prostitution.

"They're destroying our country with the drugs. The police don't listen when we tell them. So we'll close the drugs dens‚" he said.
