A critically injured man was airlifted to hospital for specialised treatment after a light aircraft crash in Midrand on Wednesday night.

Two other people were also seriously hurt‚ paramedics said.

Netcare911 said the light aircraft crashed on King Willow Crescent.

Emer-G-Med said they responded at 7.15pm to the light aircraft crash‚ which was in the Randjiesfontien Estate at Midrand.

"It was reported by witnesses that the light aircraft crashed‚ just after it took off from a nearby airport‚" the service said.

On arrival paramedics found that three people - a pilot‚ a student and a passenger - were critically injured.

"The patients were found lying a short distance away‚ after having been pulled from the burning wreckage by residents of the estate‚" Emer-G-Med said.

All three had sustained severe third degree burns and required rapid Advanced Life Support intervention. Emer-G-Med's trauma doctor worked alongside paramedics to stabilise the critical patients‚ two of whom were placed on full life support.

The Netcare911 Aeromedical Helicopter was called to the scene to airlift the pilot‚ who sustained the most severe injuries‚ to a specialist Johannesburg hospital.

The two others were rushed by road ambulance to various nearby specialist Trauma Hospitals for further care.

The exact cause of the crash is unknown and will be investigated by the relevant authorities.
