A 76-year-old KwaZulu-Natal man has been arrested for shooting at police on Friday morning.

Police had been searching for suspects in the KwaNqetho area‚ near Kloof‚ when they came under attack after approaching a homestead.

"When police introduced themselves‚ the suspect fired several shots at the police and fled. A police officer was injured and he was taken to hospital for medical attention. A case of attempted murder was opened for investigation‚" said police spokesman Captain Nqobile Gwala.

He said the suspect was sought for the murder of 32-year-old Sibusiso Bhengu‚ who was last month allegedly assaulted‚ tied to the back of a vehicle and dragged. He was taken to hospital where he later died.

The older man was arrested and found to be in possession of a 9mm pistol‚ which is believed to have been used during the shooting‚ as well as 37 rounds of ammunition‚ said Gwala.

"He will be charged for murder‚ attempted murder and possession of firearm and ammunition. He will appear in the Pinetown Magistrates Court soon."
