An off-duty metro police officer is in a critical condition after he was ambushed when he travelled home on Sunday.

City of Cape Town mayoral committee member for safety and security‚ JP Smith‚ said eight shots were fired at his vehicle and three bullets hit him.

“Metro Police Constable Mkontwana was ambushed at the intersection of Eisleben and Highlands Drive in Mitchell’s Plain on his way home to Mandalay last night just after 9 pm‚” Smith said on Monday morning.

The officer was rushed to hospital and had to undergo an emergency operation on Sunday night at Gatesville Melomed hospital.

“We will do everything we can to support his family. Our special investigations unit and the metro police will work closely with the South African police to make sure that we bring an arrest to those persons responsible‚” Smith said.
