Western Cape police have been deployed to the Delft township‚ where a taxi war has forced authorities to consider shutting down certain ranks.
However‚ police could not confirm reports of shootings in the area.
On Wednesday Transport and Public Works MEC Donald Grant said he would place a notice in the Government Gazette to declare Delft ''a high-risk area for public transport''.
Once this is done‚ the Provincial Regulatory Entity will be empowered to suspend operating licences to close down some ranks and ''suspend operations by minibus taxis on identified routes''.
"In order to avert such drastic measures‚ my department has‚ in the meantime appointed a group of seasoned‚ independent mediators to bring all parties involved in the conflict in Delft to the table‚ and to get them to cease hostilities and work towards a peaceful resolution‚'' Grant said in a statement.
On Thursday morning images of burning vehicles in the area were posted on social media.
Police spokesman‚ Captain FC van Wyk‚ said there was no record of shootings in Delft.
"Currently a strong police presence is in the area monitoring the situation. We will continue until normality has been restored. We urge both the commuters and taxi operators to cooperate with the police‚ as our objective is to ensure safety for all‚'' Van Wyk said.
