Police were on the scene of a mass shooting in Hilton‚ at the foot of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands‚ early on Wednesday.

Five people were killed and one police officer was shot in the face at about 2am.

Provincial police said that information was still being gathered.

ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said: “Shortly after 2am‚ paramedics from ER24 were called to the scene in Hilton where they found five men‚ believed to be suspects‚ in a veld next to the road.

“Upon assessment‚ they found that the men showed no signs of life and were later declared dead by paramedics. It is understood that a policeman was wounded in the face during the shooting incident.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital by his colleagues.”

This is a developing story.
